The September episode of TuneSick Select drops later this week, featuring Russian born singer and artist Maria Roslova.
Maria Roslova is a Russian singer and songwriter as well as an artist and fashion designer. Originally from Russia, she came over to the UK for the first time many years ago to study a fashion degree and learn about the trade. Many skills were picked up during the time of study, things like learning how to design clothes, but not just the design side but also the business side of things. She developed an understanding of how to build and run your own fashion or retail outlet - things like marketing and website design.
Whilst studying Maria was also busy recording music - her other passion. Working with her fellow bandmates they produced the song Sheep Fucked In The Head, a play on the whole Tinder dating game and according to Maria ''about the need to create a family or have independence, about dating and the way society fucks women. It's essentially a satire on the subconscious mind of a woman within society, in addition to the expectations placed on her.
As if the singer wasn't busy enough with making the song, she was also able to make a video to accompany it. I could not stop laughing watching the video, it was packed with memorable moments such as dancing with a sheep. In fact, I think the video is just as good as the Jazz Punk song and even somewhat makes the song actually because it is so hilarious. It definitely has a Jazz and Punk element to it, one that easily goes into either, depending on what mood you're in.
Anyway, after completing her degree the singer stayed in the UK for a while before heading back home to the motherland until she recently returned back to the UK - earlier this year. It's been a difficult past year or so, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine being the most obvious reason why. One's not to forget the whole Covid pandemic that brought the world to a standstill for a whole 12 months and more. Maria was actually meant to come to the UK earlier but Russia's war with Ukraine meant visa applications were taking much longer than normal to process
Nonetheless, the artist is overjoyed to finally be here and is eager to get working on new music to release. There are big plans for her and reallly she could not be in a better place - London is full opportunities you can't find anywhere else. ''It's about time'' she says, and we certainly agree. Stay tuned for more to come from the Jazz Punk singer. We might even see a new clothing line or two... who knows?
